You have to be careful with everything you buy especially when it is packaged. You cannot assume that your dairy products are naturally made with just milk or that your non-dairy products are healthy because they are free of lactose. Packaged food contains many additives. Always read the labels! One ingredient I have eliminated entirely from our house is CARAGEENAN.
What is carrageenan?
• Carrageenan is a food additive that comes from red algae.
• It is used to thicken foods and make them taste more fatty.
What can contain carrageenan?
• Yogurt
• Ice cream
• Cheese
• Milk
• Non-dairy substitutes
• Deli meats
• Frozen pizzas
• Nutritional bars
• Other processed items
It is even in organic food!
Why is carrageenan bad?
The Cornucopia Institute states, “Animal studies have repeatedly shown that food-grade carrageenan causes gastrointestinal inflammation and higher rates of intestinal lesions, ulcerations and even malignant tumors.” The concern is that the consummation of carrageenan on a regular basis can cause inflammation, which could lead to more serious diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.
What do I replace it with?
• Here is a great list of replacements for your carrageenan items: http://www.cornucopia.org/shopping-guide-to-avoiding-organic-foods-with-carrageenan/
My suggestion is to remove the carrageenan from your house. There are so many wonderful replacements, you wont miss it! Check the labels!
