Everyone has their go-to ingredient. You use it on almost everything, it is great for adding flavor and you don’t have to put much thought into it. Some people swear by ketchup, others love their dijon and I’ve even heard of soy sauce as a go-to.
My secret ingredient is mirin. Mirin originated as a Japanese rice wine and is generally used for cooking. It is sweet and very versatile. It can be used in sauces, glazes, soups, pastas and more. Pair with a little shoyu for an awesome marinade or sauté onions with a dash of mirin to start off a soup or tomato sauce. Whether it be an Asian inspired flavor or traditional Italian, it will add something special to your dish.
Mirin has great benefits! Besides being deliciously sweet due to the fermentation process, it has naturally occurring amino acids and enzymes.
Just remember, all mirin is not created equal. Many contain preservatives, GMOs and other additives. The one I choose is by Eden. It is high quality and has no artificial ingredients!
So, tell me…what is your secret ingredient???
